The South Beach Diet Plan was developed in the mid-1990s by a famous doctor known by the name of Arthur Agatston. He did not achieve this alone he had help from Marie Almon. It was originally called the Modified Carbohydrate Diet. Yea that’s a mouth full. The name would soon change to the South Beach Diet when Agastston moved his location to the South Beach neighborhood in Miami.

It was originally created for the use of Agatston’s own patients. The doctor quickly noticed that low-fat and carbohydrate diets were not lowering his patient’s weight. But his patients following the Atkins diet were.

With him not being able to administer the Atkins diet to his patients. He was forced to reevaluate his own diet plan and that he did. This resulted in a new dieting program on the market and like most new weight loss programs. It gained a lot of attention very fast via word of mouth and advertisement.


This went on from the early 90s on into the early 2000s. In 1999 Miami Tv News broadcasted a show. Letting viewers see the results of the new and improved diet by Agatston. This sky rocketed the diet’s popularity locally and nonlocally.

Fast-forward to 2003 the diet is now being produced in a paperback book form for the first time. Describing the diet in detail. By the following year, there was said to be roughly 8 million copies in print.

To add to the popularity and advertising. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was said to be using the diet. Rather he was or not his name being attached to the diet did nothing but drive more attention to plan.

In 2008 the Academy Of Nutrition And Dietetics found that readers are more likely to see positive results from reading the South Beach Diet book than they would if they were to read a fitness one.

In 2015 South Beach Diet was purchased by Nutrisystem for $15M. Nutrisystem announced to the public that they had planned to launch new lines of South Beach Diet products by 2017.

The book shows you how to consume high-fiber, low glycemic carbohydrates, unsaturated fats and lean protein. In short, this means to help you lose weight.

The diet has three levels and it slowly adds higher intakes of carbohydrates. While at the same time decreasing the proportions of fat and protein.

You will consume lean meats and veggies. This is great for weight loss. After eating them for a while it’ll become second nature to you. I remember when I went vegan and it was not pretty at first. But over time I was eating vegan foods like it was nothing.

  1. It seems now like a no brainer to cut out carbs to lose wight but I remember when the South Beach Diet first started, it seemed like a revolutionary concept to many people. We were force fed the idea that low fat was the way to achieve weight loss, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. I have found fitness and carb cutting to be the best way to lose weight and that is essentially the concept behind south beach. It is a lot easier than it sounds, as soon you as get over not having bread!

  2. Hmmmmm. for some reason I always thought the south beach diet was an extreme low calorie diet used by models. Informative article William. In your article you mentioned that the diet has three levels. What are the three levels? and how long would I need to do this diet to attain weight loss?

    So, great job on that.

    “Not backed by Science” is one big reason why I would not wanna buy this. Is there a better alternative?
