In today’s article, I will be reviewing the vegan diet and what it is. This is a very popular trend in the world nowadays. I will say that there will be no need for dairy in this one. So if you are strong dairy. This is not the diet for you and maybe not weight loss in general.

A vegan diet is simply where you consume only plant-derived foods. You don’t eat any animals or animal products. This includes flesh, land or sea animals. Milk is a no go along with eggs or honey. This is one of my favorite dieting methods. Because you don’t have to push out hundreds or thousands of dollars.

In a short amount of time. You also don’t have to move to a big city to get the best of the best. You can do this by shopping at your local supermarket or shopping somewhere that sells organic veggies/plants only. The supermarket is ok.

But their food most of the time is not organic. It contains a lot of crap they sprayed on it to keep it from doing various things. While going through the process of being displayed for the masses to buy and consume.

Organic places that note that the veggies or plants have been grown organically and contain no GMOs etc. Are a lot more safe than what you would get at WalMart.

Although it is a lot healthier to shop at an organic certified distributor. There is nothing safer than you growing the food naturally in your own backyard. You know what your eating and you know how it was processed all the way through.

 

What You Will Need In A Vegan Diet

 

I will name 5 things that are critical to your vegan diet. You must get these things in your system to function properly.

 

  • Protein – Protein is very important. It is a nutrient for the skin, bone, muscle, and organ health. But note, that you are a vegan and vegan’s don’t eat meat, eggs, or dairy products. Which are rich in protein. So you must eat a variety of plant-based foods to meet the daily protein requirements. Some vegan foods are very high in protein like soybeans, soy-based meat substitutes, soy milk, tofu, black beans, chickpeas, almonds, peanut butter, various nuts, and seeds, and whole grain products.

 

  • Calcium – is a mineral essential for the health of your teeth and bones. Vegans can get enough calcium in their system without consuming milk and other dairy products. By eating these plant-based foods spinach, kale, broccoli, collard greens, blackstrap molasses, and calcium-fortified products like soy milk, tofu, cereal, and juice.

 

  • Iron – is very key to maintaining healthy red blood cells and the proper transportation of oxygen in your body. Some vegan foods that are great sources of iron. Are dried fruits, dried beans, peas, dark leafy green vegetables, whole grains, and enriched cereals. In addition to eating these foods, vegans can enhance the absorption of iron by also consuming foods high in vitamin C, such as citrus juices and tomatoes.

 

  • Vitamin B12 – Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin essential for the production of red blood cells. Vitamin B12 is really only present in animal products, so vegans must make sure they consume foods that have had the Vitamin B12 added to them. Foods like nutritional yeast, fortified cereals, or fortified soy milk. You can also take a Vitamin B12 supplement.

What To Expect Once You Go With The Vegan Diet

Once you decide to go vegan. You will be tempted each and every day to go back to your old eating habits. I will say that when I tried it. I failed miserably at first. Because I couldn’t resist the temptation of smoked ribs/fries/chicken etc.. It’s just something about the smell of meat once you go vegan at the beginning that kinda just lures you to it. But once I made my mind up I toughed it out.

You may feel sick or empty at first. This is completely normal. Your body has to adjust to your new way of eating. Depending on how long you have been alive or have been eating unhealthy. You are now trying to reverse years and years of an eating process you’ve made your body accustomed to. After a few weeks, your body will get with the program and you will be fine.

Your friends and family will look at you a bit strange and ask a ton of questions. This is going to happen it’s almost guaranteed. If you go to the thanksgiving dinner and you pass up on all the ham and turkey.

You are going to draw some confused looks and be bombarded with questions. This is fine, Just let them know what you are doing and that if they are for you then they should respect it. Don’t stand too close to the ham and turkey table at thanksgiving.

I have heard stories from ex-vegans. That the chopped ham and turkey can sometimes grow legs and jump right into your mouth if you aren’t paying attention to them. Many vegans have failed victim to this. Don’t you be the next one.

No that is not real. It was meant to be funny. It all goes back to the temptation thing.

Another thing to take into consideration. Is to not just up and stop eating animals, dairy products and replace all of that with junk food. Vegans often think that if they aren’t eating meat it’s ok to indulge a box of 12-dozen doughnuts.

Junk food is just as bad. I mean it is ok to have some junk food every now and then. But a constant pattern of eating chips and candy bars won’t do you any justice.

 

Don’t make the switch at once. You won’t just wake up one morning and be vegan. It will take some work and time to slowly grow into. Moderately implement plant-based foods into your diet. While letting go of meats and dairy products.

 

Reading food labels will become second nature to you. Vegans must do this to ensure what they are eating is appropriate for their new found diet. Reading labels is going to be very beneficial to you with this diet.

 

You will feel happier. It is something that most vegans feel happier most of the time. Becuase of the arachidonic acid found in the vegetarian diet. This can ultimately can spur neurological changes that drag down your mood.

 

You will not spend as much money as you use to when you were eating randomly at this food joint and that one. Believe it or not, I have known people who’ve spent over $3,000 dollars on fast food and eating out in about 3 months. They didn’t even realize it. Until they checked their bank accounts and totaled up all the expenses from food. Vegans are more focused on their food. Which will gradually make you become more acquainted with the prices and how you spend your money on food. If you grow your food. You will save even more.

 

Nuts will become an everyday thing to you. Wehn I was on this diet. I did not want to replace my snack food with junk. So I started buying nuts. I liked almonds in particular. I kept a bag on me or close by. You cannot go wrong with them. They also provide you with protein and other healthy ingredients.

You can find them all over the place really. Like I stated before you can go to any local supermarket and organic food store. These are great and the stores vary all across the board. If they sell plant-based foods.

You can buy from there. Growing your own food is an even better option. But I know that everyone is not a farmer and to do this will take time and some serious determination. You will have to know what you are doing.

Or else you will plant a bunch of seeds and your plants won’t grow properly or they’ll grow and be eaten up by bugs. It’s a plethora of things you need to research and become one with. Before you decide to start growing your own foods. If you are interested in taking this route. I recommend having a look at this.

If you do not have access to any food markets and do not wish to become a farmer/grow your own foods. Then you can always buy your foods online. The one I highly recommend online is amazon. Though I don’t really trust buying food on the internet or didn’t at one point in my life. It is a thing and people do it. So it is ok for you to buy your veggies online. Amazon is a very trusted source. People buy everything on there each day. It’s like a Walmart online on steroids. I know for some this is the only option. I will just say. Examine your food very closely once you receive it.

Look for any holes or liquid like substance on them. Make sure it is sealed entirely and it wouldn’t hurt to do a bit of inside examination. To make sure everything is how it needs to be all the way around. With what you ordered.

I will say that dairy and meats are not the worst things in the world. In order to do this diet the right way. You must not consume any of either. I have done the vegan diet myself. I tried it way back. This was before it was as popular as it is today.

I have heard many people stay away from the vegan diet. Because they feel that they will lose all of their weight and just dissolve down into nothing. Which is not true. Elephants do not eat meat and you see how big they get. That goes for many other animals in the world as well. Don’t let the famous “you must eat meat to get protein” statement fool you. It has been said over and over again.

That in order to get bigger and get the protein your body needs. You must indulge in a lot of meats. That’s simply not the case. Look at gorillas and rhinos.

Not saying you will get as big as an elephant, gorilla or rhino. Just saying your diet will be similar to theirs. So you do not have to worry about becoming smaller. If you exercise with it. You will get even bigger than you planned on doing at the beginning. Not big in a bad way. But big in a good healthy way.

    Thank you for such a nice post.
    I’d love to go vegan, but I don’t think I can. I just love dairy products.
    I don’t like meat, and i only eat chicken, but when you have a family with kids it is difficult to make any diet: my husband loves meat, and kids usually eat much dairy products.
    I try to make healthy food. We don’t eat fried food or potatoes at home, and I try do avoid junk food.
    I’m going to take a look into your pages. Do you have vegan recipes? I love tofu or seitan, but I don’t know how to cook those and to keep it tasty.

    1. Thank you for your comment Alex. I feel your pain. I love a lot of meats. I’m ok on the diary. But I need me some fish every now and then. I do not have any recipes for you. I can however post some in the near future.

  2. Wow, this is a good article that opened my eyes to the world of vegetarian. I am not a vegetarian but I am respectful of the beliefs.

    Sometimes it’s nice to listen from other perspectives. I may be tempted to go vegan for a couple days in every month. Does anyone else do that?

  3. A good site and good subject.Vegan diet can be provide all the nutrients needed to a healthy body. One possible problem is vitamin B12 as you mentioned, it is possible better to take supplements as plants are poor of this vitamin. Eating vegan food decrease the possibility of being fat and the percent of unhealthy liquids in the body and consequently decreases heart diseases. One important thing to get all your needs of protein is to mix several cereals or legumes.
